What We Do

We believe that access to quality mental health care is a human right and can be life changing. Pro Bono Counseling connects individuals experiencing limited access to mental health care with no-cost, high quality services delivered by volunteer professionals. Our goal is to help uninsured and underinsured individuals in Washington State gain access to the right mental health professional — or emerging health professional — to meet their needs.

Services offered: outpatient mental health therapy and psychiatric medication management.

Eligibility Criteria

Our services are available to uninsured and underinsured individuals living at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level in Washington State.

Application Process

  • Step 1: Enroll online here by completing the short intake form or call 206.788.4204 to speak directly with a member of our care coordination team.
  • Step 2: A 30-minute confidential phone screening will be conducted by a member of our care coordination team.
  • Step 3: You will be matched and referred to a screened, “best-fit” volunteer mental health provider. A member of the care coordination team will contact you with the name of your assigned mental health provider.
  • Step 4: Your assigned mental health provider will reach out to you directly to get started.
  • Step 5: A member of the care coordination team will follow up to ensure you get connected and that your assigned provider is a good fit for you.

  • Is there a cost?
    • No, Pro Bono Counseling is a free program. All clinicians provide care on a volunteer basis.

    • What if I’m not sure if I am eligible?
      • Enroll regardless of if you are sure you are eligible. A care coordination team member will determine your eligibility during the screening call. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, we can provide alternative mental health resources to help meet your needs.

      • How long can I participate in Pro Bono Counseling services?
        • The duration and approach of services are determined by the provider's expertise, your personal circumstances, and the available resources. .

      • What if I’m not sure if I am eligible?
      • Enroll regardless of if you are sure you are eligible. A care coordination team member will determine your eligibility during the screening call. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, we can provide alternative mental health resources to help meet your needs.

      • How long can I participate in Pro Bono Counseling services?
      • The duration and approach of services are determined by the provider's expertise, your personal circumstances, and the available resources.

      • How do you determine what provider is the “best fit”?
      • Our program manager is a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Washington with years of experience in intake coordination and referral. Clients are matched according to their stated preferences (e.g. provider’s gender, cultural knowledge, languages spoken, location of services, etc.), as well as the fit between their needs and the provider’s specialties, experience, and limits.

      • What if my matched provider is not a good fit?

      You can always reach back out to Pro Bono Counseling to be rematched with a different therapist or prescriber.

    • What if none of the Pro Bono Counseling clinicians are a good fit for me?
      • Pro Bono Counseling care coordinators will work with you to find the best possible therapist, even if it is outside of our program. We are also always adding new clinicians with different specialties. Additionally, you can choose to remain on a waitlist until an appropriate clinician is found. .

    • What languages do you provide services in?
      • We currently have services in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Pro Bono Counseling is always trying to expand our language offerings.

    • How do providers get involved?
      • Mental health professionals join our network to provide free services by pledging to volunteer care to a certain number of Pro Bono Counseling clients. All providers meet with the Pro Bono Counseling team for orientation to the program and so that we can learn more about their clinical specialties and needs. For more information, visit this page.
